With the UK CBD market still very much on the rise the popularity and demand of CBD products will remain as high as ever but the question still remains – how do I correctly store my CBD edibles?

CBD edibles are often categorized as a food and health supplement and as such are often stored with common food products in the kitchen or medicines in a medicine cabinet. However as CBD is extracted from hemp it is a plant based substance and is, therefore, susceptible to decay with age.

However, with correct storage techniques, high quality CBD edibles can be preserved along with their full cannabinoid content, terpenes and flavonoids. Therefore, when storing CBD edibles it is important to remember these 3 main components; light, heat and air.

Keep your edibles away from direct light

Many hemp derived products including CBD edibles and CBD oil can be damaged through exposure to direct sunlight as the CBD content can degrade at a faster rate.

Whilst most CBD products come in packaging designed to protect them from direct light it is important to store your CBD away from sunny areas such as windows or counters that receive direct sunlight as well as areas such as car dashboards.

The most optimum place for storing your CBD edibles is in a cool, dry area that receives little to no light as the life of CBD is prolonged in these environments. Places such as pantries and refrigerators are ideal, however if this isn’t an option, wrapping your CBD products in a material such as aluminium foil is another way to protect your CBD edibles from exposure to the light.

Keep CBD edibles away from heat

High temperatures have the ability to completely ruin your CBD edibles which makes it essential to keep your stash away from direct heat sources such as radiators, the sun or appliances that may produce heat.

Whilst the CBD in CBD edibles is an organic substance the extraction process doesn’t ensure 100% purity and may contain various minerals that may react differently with heat and change the properties of your CBD products.

If you are looking for a way to store CBD edibles for a prolonged period of time and have no way of guaranteeing that they will remain away from a heat source, storing them in the freezer can be a viable option.

Keep CBD away from Air

In a similar manner to light and heat, exposure to air can degrade your CBD edibles and reduce their effectiveness which is less than ideal, especially if you are taking CBD edibles for their medicinal benefits.

The oxygen present in the air has the ability to degrade your CBD edibles through a process called oxidative stress, a process which creates a chemical imbalance in the CBD and as such it is important to limit direct exposure to the air.

Therefore when storing your CBD edibles ensure that the cap is fitted tightly or if switching containers ensure that it is suitable for long term storage.
